February 6 would have been Ronald Reagan's 99th birthday. I hope that each of you have a few moments to reflect on the life and times of him, and what he meant to you. I know that I will. In 1964 he told conservatives that “You and I have a rendezvous with destiny.” He met that destiny when he became President of the United States.

I think the most important thing President Obama must do is to create permanent well paying jobs that would serve as the foundation for a stable American economy. As a businessman for the past 42 years, I know what it is to create jobs and to make a payroll. This same sense of financial discipline is what I would bring to Capitol Hill, where it is sorely needed. Only after we have restored a sense of financial responsibility to our government can we start to solve the many problems facing the American people. We cannot spend our way out of our economic problems. If American families are being asked to make sacrifices, then so should the federal government.

Like millions of Americans, my family and I woke up Christmas morning expecting to spend the day celebrating and relaxing with family and friends. But by mid afternoon, our celebration was abruptly changed to worry and shock as we learned that a Nigerian citizen had attempted to blow up a Northwest Airlines flight as it prepared to land in Detroit. Within a few hours, our government had pronounced the incident an attempted terrorist attack.

A few weeks ago, the Obama Administration announced that the President had no plans to go to Copenhagen to attend the United Nations Climate Summit. Then they announced that the President had changed his mind and would appear at the beginning of the Summit. Now the Administration says the President intends to speak toward the end of the summit. The Administration says the President will travel to Denmark "to give momentum to the negotiations there."
